Towards Jazz in Finland 100th Anniversary

Panel Discussion: Jazz as a Force for Social Change

Jazz is much more than music – throughout history, it has served as a vehicle for change, activism and dialogue. Born as a voice for social experience, jazz has maintained its role as an art form that takes a stand. UNESCO has recognized this by establishing International Jazz Day to highlight jazz’s role as a global advocate for peace, human rights, and mutual understanding.

In Finland jazz has had an impact on society since the 1920s. It has given a voice to the youth, challenged gender roles and acted as a symbol of counterculture. Activism within the jazz scene even led to the founding of the Finnish Jazz Federation in 1966 and helped strengthen jazz’s position in cultural policy.

Today, jazz lives and breathes contemporary issues – from the climate crisis to global conflicts. What is the societal role of jazz in Finland today? And what could it be in the future?

Come listen and join the conversation as experts in jazz, social influence and activism gather on the Jazz-Espa stage to reflect on the societal power of jazz in 2020s Finland.

Participants:
Jari Perkiömäki (Sibelius Academy, lecturer)
Reiska Laine (musician)
Nina Öhman (Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, Postdoc)
Mikko Innanen (musician)
Selma Savolainen (musician)

Known for their direct audience contact live on stage, Viba's profound songs are complemented by the band's charming improvisation.

Valjakka & Vannesluoma feat. Mingo Rajandi

In the music of pianist Juho Valjakka, singer Josefiina Vannesluoma and double bassist Mingo Rajandi, delicate and powerful, clear and undefined meet. The musicians, who also compose, seek a common and separate way of being at the intersections of art forms, drawing meanings from poetry and movement, among other things. In the acoustic avant-garde of sound, piano and double bass, one moment rests in beautifully rustling textures, and the next is surprised by the encounters of language and tonal meanings.

Juho Valjakka is a pianist and composer focused on jazz and improvised music, fascinated by the ambiguity and possibilities of indeterminacy in art. In addition to the Juho Valjakka Trio, which has been recognized with a Jazz Emma nomination, he plays with several top domestic ensembles. Josefiina Vannesluoma is a Turku-born singer and composer, also recognized with three Jazz Emma nominations, who leads the bands Mortal Lease and Signe. The music of Estonian-born double bassist and composer Mingo Rajandi blends composition and improvisation, stretching genre boundaries and art forms. Mingo, who is also trained as an actor, has been commissioned to create several premieres for jazz and classical music festivals.

Aurora Hentunen Quintet

Aurora Hentunen is a versatile pianist-composer, bringing her domestic jazz quintet to Jazz-Espa on Friday. Winner of the Jazz/Soul of the Year award at the 2025 Indie Awards, Hentunen's third album Little Further (Eclipse Music) blends acoustic and electronic soundscapes. The music on the album reflects recent events and the emotional state they have caused, a forced collective standstill and uncertainty about the future. However, the music gently encourages listeners to continue their journey and trust in tomorrow. Positive reviews describe Hentunen's music as fresh, surprising and unique. The album features bassist Linda May Han Oh, who has performed with e.g. Pat Metheny and Vijay Iyer. In addition to leading her own ensemble, Hentunen is known for her compositions for big bands and classical music ensembles, among others.

"As with the best albums, the artist's fresh album Little Further unfolds in layers, leaving enough space for the listener's own interpretations." -Indie Awards 2025 jury

Internationally recognized top musicians, pianist Aki Rissanen and saxophonist Mikko Innanen, are old friends who are now returning to the stage with a new duo repertoire and recording. The material recently created and rehearsed in residence in Western Uusimaa delves into fundamental questions of art and humanity, as well as trivial and insignificant little matters – described by the duo themselves. Stylistically, Rissanen and Innanen move simultaneously within the tradition of jazz and in some parallel reality of the future, where everything is allowed.

The second band performing on Children’s Saturday is Django Collective Helsinki, known for delivering cheerful swing and jazz music for children, including performances as part of the Concert Centre Finland’s repertoire. Led by Aki Hauru, the band formed in 2011 has since enlivened the cultural scene with its rootsy and cheerful Jazz Manouche music from the 1920s to the 1950s, in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.
